Ammonium removal in granular activated carbon up-flow submerged reactors containing native bacterial consortium

چکیده مقاله:
Free ammonium in industries wastewater could be one of the worst toxic contaminants of aquatic life if diluted in water. Biological nitrogen removal (BNR) is the most common method for removing ammonium and nitrate from wastewater. Attached growth and suspended growth are the main BNR systems. The aim of the present work was to study the treatment of petrochemical wastewater (ammonium and nitrate removal) using native bacterial consortium isolated from Kermanshah Wastewater Treatment Plant, Iran, in two laboratory-scale high performance, granular activated carbon up-flow submerged reactors (GAC-USRs). The average maximum removal efficiency of NH4-N and NO3-N was 97.46% and 97.58% at the nitrification rate (NR) and denitrification rate (DR) of 2.44 kg NH4-N/m3.day and 2.31 kg NO3-N/m3.day, respectively. It was confirmed that the immobilized native bacterium on GAC could achieve a high ammonium and nitrate removal efficiency. The results of this study showed that the Bio-GAC-USRs can be an efficient method for complete ammonium and nitrate removal from wastewater.

4-Chlorophenol degradation by a bacterial consortium: development of a granular activated carbon bio®lm reactor
A bacterial consortium that can degrade chloroand nitrophenols has been isolated from the rhizosphere of Phragmitis communis. Degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) by a consortium attached to granular activated carbon (GAC) in a bio®lm reactor was evaluated during both open and closed modes of operation. During the operation of the bio®lm reactor, 4-CP was not detected in the column euent, bein...

متن کاملBatch Study on COD and Ammonia Nitrogen Removal Using Granular Activated Carbon and Cockle Shells
Landfills generate leachate that contains elevated concentration of contaminants and is hazardous to human health and the ecosystem. In this study, the mixture of granular activated carbon and cockle shells was investigated for remediation of COD and ammonia from stabilized landfill leachate. All adsorbent media were sieved to a particle size between 2.00 and 3.35 mm. The optimum mixing ratio, ...

The biological phosphorus removal is a microbial process widely used for removing phosphorus fromwastewater to avoid eutrophication of water bodies. The study was aimed to screen the efficient phosphatereducing isolates and used to remove phosphate from synthetic wastewater using batch scale process. Thethree most efficient phosphate reducers were isolated and screened from eu...
متن کاملCombined hydrous ferric oxide and quaternary ammonium surfactant tailoring of granular activated carbon for concurrent arsenate and perchlorate removal.
Activated carbon was tailored with both iron and quaternary ammonium surfactants so as to concurrently remove both arsenate and perchlorate from groundwater. The iron (hydr)oxide preferentially removed the arsenate oxyanion but not perchlorate; while the quaternary ammonium preferentially removed the perchlorate oxyanion, but not the arsenate. The co-sorption of two anionic oxyanions via distin...
